On Monday, Google unveiled its upcoming redesign of the various Google Play app icons.
These icons all contain the Google Play triangle in the background and an item that symbolizes the app’s function in the foreground. All of the icons also boast bold, inviting colors.
Most of the new icons consist of their application’s respective old icon placed on top of the aforementioned Google Play triangle. However, some new app icons, like those of the Google Play Music and Google Play Newsstand apps, have a more noticeable difference from their old counterparts.
The Google Play Music app’s new, redesigned icon’s foreground item is a music symbol on top of an orange circle that is surrounded by a yellow ring. This circled music symbol differs from the Google Play Music app’s old icon, which was a pair of orange headphones.
The Google Play Newsstand app’s revamped icon adopts a completely different color scheme than that of the app’s old icon, as the old icon was based on a blue color scheme while the new icon is based on a purple color scheme.
Additionally, there have been some more subtle changes between the old and new icons of some of the Google Play apps. For instance, the Google Play Movies & TV app’s icon previously was a filmstrip with rounded corners, while the app’s new icon’s filmstrip lacks rounded corners.
Another subtle change in icons occurred in the Google Play Books app. The book portrayed in the older version of this app’s icon has rounded corners, like that of the old Google Play Movies & TV app’s icon, while the new version’s book does not have rounded corners on its spine. The rectangles representing text on the cover of the old Google Play Books icon have also been removed.
Google says that these new app icons will begin rolling out to the Google Play apps in a few weeks.
